The City of Norfolk has shared the following helpful information about how to have a safe, happy Halloween in 2020:
Low Risk
- Carving and displaying pumpkins with members of your household
- Carving and displaying pumpkins socially distanced with friends or neighbors
- Decorating house or living space
- Scavenger style hunt at home instead of trick or treating
- Virtual Halloween costume contest
- Halloween movie night with members of your household
Moderate Risk
- Having treats lined up at the end of the driveway spaced so there’s no contact and trick or treaters can socially distance (6 ft+)
- Stopping at houses where hosts are wearing masks and social distancing can be maintained
- Attending a small outdoors trunk or treat or similar event where everyone is wearing a mask and social distancing can be maintained
- Visiting pumpkin patch or orchard where everyone is wearing a mask and social distance can be maintained
High Risk
- Trick or treating at many houses and/or neighborhoods going door to door
- Visiting houses where hosts are not wearing masks and social distancing is not maintained
- Attending parties or events that are crowded and social distancing is not maintained
- Going on hayrides or tractor rides with people outside your household
- Going to indoor haunted houses where social distancing is not maintained and screaming may occur
Trick or Treating Guidelines
- Do NOT participate in trick or treating if you have tested positive for covid in the last 10 days, come in contact with someone who has had covid in the last 14 days, or if you are exhibiting any possible covid symptoms.
- Maintain social distancing between you and anyone not in your household.
- Wash or sanitize your hands before handing out candy or trick or treating.
- Wear a cloth mask whether you are trick or treating or handing out candy. Costume masks do not count as they do not tightly cover the mouth and nose. Wear a cloth mask under a costume mask.
- When handing out candy do this outdoors, candy spaced out so people are not all reaching in the same bowl, and social distancing can be maintained.
